Gotthard Schuh’s photographs of Venice are convincingly vivid. Mainly because Schuh succeeds in capturing a long-gone, yet ever-present atmosphere of the Italian city with his camera. By bringing together a transient vibe which, at the same time, represents the unique flair of the city, with Venice’s visual landmarks in the photographic images, Schuh evokes notions of belonging and unity in the viewer. It is common knowledge that Venice ever so often is faced with the danger of disappearing. Nevertheless, the city persists time and again. This fact can be associated with the city’s capability to adapt and change. However often the city is forced to transform itself, Venice never loses its magic. These notions can clearly be sensed in Gotthard Schuh’s photographic documentation of the city and thus capture us as viewers.
