From 1 November to 21 December 2024, Galerie 94 in Baden's Merker Areal is showing photographs by Patrick Lambertz. Under the title ‘SPIELRÄUME’, a compilation of his works from recent years will be shown for the first time, which captivate with their compositional rigour and profound examination of photography.
SOLITARIES
Lambertz often stages his motifs as if on a stage, in reduced, almost surreal landscapes. Whether in the winter snow or autumn rain - solitaires such as the ‘Chalets of Switzer-land’, the high seats from ‘The Architecture of the Hunt’, the ‘Chapels’ or the famous ‘Hotel Belvédère’ appear again and again in Lambertz's works and are imprinted on the memory through their minimalist depiction. In contrast to Bernd and Hilla Becher, who became famous for their serial black and white photographs of water towers and half-timbered houses, Lambertz allows himself to add a personal interpretation to his motifs. On the one hand, the season and weather play an important role in his works, while on the other, he does not shy away from retouching and colour-editing his photographs afterwards in order to achieve the desired effect.
SEESTÜCKE
Lambertz's latest work ‘SEESTÜCKE’ is making its debut at the Baden exhibition and is inspired by a quote from Marcel Proust:
“The true voyage of discovery lies not in seeking new landscapes,
but in seeing with new eyes.”
With this mission in mind, to discover the unusual in the obvious, Lambertz has taken a magical side to Lake Zurich. In traditional painting, the term ‘seascape’ refers to the dramatised depiction of a wild sea or scenes of ships in mighty battles. With his seascapes, Lambertz' contrasts these heroic, sometimes threatening portraits of the sea with contemplative, monochrome seascapes, thereby - not entirely unintentionally - ironising this historical association.
The ‘SPIELRÄUME’ exhibition offers an excellent opportunity to discover Patrick Lambertz's photographs from different creative periods in one place.
