Subject of Kostas Maros’ Cicatrice are the marble deposits of the apuan Alps. In this region, the extraction of marble has a longstanding tradition and can be traced back all the way to ancient Roman times. Furthermore, marble is inextricably linked to classical Italian art. Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo, have, as is well known, used the exquisite stone for the creation of countless sculptures.
From a bird’s eye view, the marble quarries of Carrara reveal deep cracks, squares, and roads—all made from marble—that create an exciting contrast to their surroundings. This view is a powerful spectacle that undoubtedly demands the observer’s respect and is it likewise linked to human intervention in nature. At the same time, the visual appeal of the so-called ‚white gold‘ is unchallenged.
However, the economic and political components that accompany the search for the high-quality ‚Carrara marble‘, expose themselves as deep scars in the white mountains. Maros’ photographs explore the unique world of marble, that has its own rationale and is marked by an almost bizarre aesthetic. The severe effects of the stone extraction—namely environmental pollution or greed—act as silent companions in the pictures.
