Paintings by Swiss artist El Frauenfelder can be interpreted as continuations of the body and therefore they represent notions of self-reflection: the viewing of the painting equals the viewing the inner body. Via her paintings Frauenfelder explores the principles of vision. In this sense the paintings reveal the history of their dynamic emergence. As a result of this the viewer discovers a variety of multifaceted tensions within the artwork: obscurity and awareness, old and new, buildup and reduction. Moreover, Frauenfelder’s paintings play with the notion of photography, as (in this case) the photographic medium stands for the obsolete desire to capture a moment in its space and time. Frauenfelder asks, if these moments as such even exist or if they too undergo a constant process of change.
